Inspired by the life and work of legendary artist and activist Will Munro (1975-2010), Vacant Closet Collective brings you an evening of queer punk film and visual art. The short film program features Will Munro’s 8mm films “You’ll Dance to Anything” and “Rebels Rule”, the artist profile “Will Munro’s Dirty Load”, and Wrik Meads “Filth”. Filmmaker Kevin Hegge will present his documentary film “She Said Boom: The Story of Fifth Column” about a group of female artists and filmmakers, including GB Jones (The Yo Yo Gang, JD’s Fanzine), who’s female art-punk band helped spawn the queercore and riot girl movements.   Punk photographers Martin Sorrondeguy (Limp Wrist) and Don Pyle (Trouble in the Camera Club) present their slideshow presentation “Clocked”: in which they explore the overt and implicit themes of homosexuality in their photographs of the underground music scene of which their work collectively spans from 1975 to the present day.

BIOGRAPHIES

will-munro  Will Munro was a Toronto-based activist, artist, and party promoter who died in 2010 from complications due to brain cancer. Although only 35 at the time of his death, in a relatively short time he profoundly transformed culture in Toronto in ways that have echoed on loudly and distinctly. Significantly, he understood the potency of community and how a gathering of similarly open people could be transformative. Through traditionally “domestic” arts such as sewing, macramé and felt work, and with the use of re-contextualized club, queer and punk iconography, Will sought to create a utopian ideal. His work was as often in the form of a party as it was a physical object, in which he explored the rich connections of queer history and iconography, identity politics, illness/health and sexual playfulness, and how he could use those tools to break down barriers that exist between various sub-communities.
Kevin Hegge is a Toronto-based filmmaker, curator, and writer. His 2012 documentary “She Said Boom: The Story of Fifth Column” about the feminist post-punk band Fifth Column, premiered at the Hot Docs Festival in Toronto and later won best Canadian film at the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival. In addition to showing his film internationally at film festivals, Hegge has since completed two music videos for Toronto-based acts Lioness and Gentlemen Reg and has begun pre-production on a new feature documentary. He is pleased to present the San Francisco premier screening of “She Said Boom: The Story of Fifth Column” as a part of the 2015 Queer Arts Festival. Kevin-Hegge_She_Said_Boom
Martin-Sorrondeguy_Porc  Martin Sorrondeguy is a San Francisco-based filmmaker, multimedia artist and musician. He has performed internationally as the vocalist with his band Los Crudos as well as the long-running queer punk band Limp Wrist. His Film Mas Alla De Los Gritos/Beyond the Screams, a documentary exploring the history of Latino punk in the U.S. from the late 1970’s through 1999, earned him the First Time Film Maker Award at the San Antonio film fest as well as international screenings. Sorrondeguy’s photography books Porqueria and Get Shot document his experiences in international underground punk communities. He continues to explore themes of sexuality and gender though photography, video, and performance.
Don Pyle is a Toronto-based artist and musician who has released 14 albums with various groups he has been part of. He is also the author of the photo-narrative book Trouble In The Camera Club documenting the beginnings of the Toronto punk scene in the mid 1970’s. He has worked extensively in the arts as a sound designer and composer/producer, including Allyson Mitchell’s award-winning Killjoy’s Kastle: A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House. Most recently he scored the feature film Portrait Of a Serial Monogamist, which will have it’s San Francisco premier at the 2015 Frameline Festival. He is currently preparing material for a box-set retrospective of his reformed band, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. Don_Pyle
scott-moore  Scott Moore is a San Francisco-based musician and events curator. He began organizing underground punk gigs in his rural Pennsylvania town at the age of 17. He has toured internationally and recorded with his queer punk band Limp Wrist. Moore’s band Flesh World, a collaboration with musician and visual artist Jess Scott, is releasing their second album on Iron Lung records. He continues to explore different aspects of expression both musically and visually. Moore is interested in organizing events that push against the mainstream commodification of queer expression.
