Laurie Toby Edison
Laurie Toby Edison shows images from Familiar Men: A Book of Male Nudes and Women En Large: Images of Fat Nudes. Her groundbreaking work puts everyone in the picture, rejecting the dominant narrow definition of beauty. Nude portraits of real people in their own settings provide a new nexus for discussion of sex and gender.

Laurie Toby Edison is an internationally exhibited photographer. Her current work in progress is Familiar Men: A Book of Male Nudes. There will be an exhibition of “Recent Works of Laurie Toby Edison” at the National Museum of Art in Osaka in August 2001. Her black-and-white photographs have been shown in venues from Soho’s A.I.R. Gallery in New York City to the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Her book, Women En Large: Images of Fat Nudes, was self-published in 1994. It has received over sixty reviews and feature articles worldwide. Edison has been a member of the Gay & Lesbian History Project, Queer Nation, and other queer activist groups. She has spoken at the Outwrite conference and other queer forums. She has two daughters and has lived and worked in San Francisco since 1980. More Web info: and
